The Hormel corporation, long tolerant of its trademark “spam” being used to mean junk email, has decided that they have had enough, and are ready to reclaim their rightful place as The Spam People. As part of their initiative, they will be launching a multi-part ad campaign in the UK, where, apparently, Spam is actually considered an edible foodstuff. With respect to the arguably rampant infringement of their trademark, Hormel’s policy to date had always seemed to be “you can use ’spam’, but not “Spam” or “SPAM”. As if to bring home that point, last year Hormel sued anti-spam company SpamArrest for trademark infringement. Said SpamArrest CEO Brian Cartmell, “Hormel is acting like a corporate cry baby.” Maybe, but a corporate cry baby who owns the trademark “Spam”, and who is not going to take it any more.
