Happy Independence Day from The Internet Patrol!   - 1,164 Views, 3 Comments

Summary: As a good percentage of the United States grinds to a halt for a day of 4th of July festivities, to celebrate our Independence Day, I'd like to make this observation: At this moment in time, many people are not terribly happy with the state of the United States. Indeed, I'd dare say that very few Americans are currently happy with the state of their home country. But I'd like everyone to take a moment to think about how absolutely extraordinary it is that we are here at all.

As a good percentage of the United States grinds to a halt for a day of 4th of July festivities, to celebrate our Independence Day, I’d like to make this observation:

At this moment in time, many people are not terribly happy with the state of the United States. Indeed, I’d dare say that very few Americans are currently happy with the state of their home country.

But I’d like everyone to take a moment to think about how absolutely extraordinary it is that we are here at all. Take a moment to think about what, exactly, was happening all those years ago, the situation that, eventually, lead up to the pivotal events of July 4th, 1776.

Then take a moment to think about the fact that in a world with cultures and countries that are thousands of years old, this country is, in fact, not even 235 years old. And, I might add, with just a hint of irony and a slightly greater hint of pride, while our country isn’t perfect - in fact it’s far from perfect - there is a lot that we have gotten right in that short time that countries that are centuries older still haven’t gotten right.

The bottom line, and this is my point - and please feel free to quote me, is that:

Administrations come and go, interpretations wax and wane, but it is to America herself, her promise - her ideals - her very foundation, that you pledge your patriotism.

Happy Birthday, America!

With love,

Anne P. Mitchell, Esq.

  1. Excellent post! These days it is easy to forget what the US is about. Sometimes, as George Carlin believed, we have sold out, and America is unfixable. If we can weather the current administration, with our Constitution still intact, we can get through anything.

I like the way you have put things in perspective.
