The Condom ringtone has to be the ultimate in socially responsible ringtones. In a novel effort to make condoms and condom use more socially acceptable in India, the BBC World Service Trust has created the Condom ringtone, free for anyone - anywhere in the world - to download. The effort has also been funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Featuring a stylized acapella rendition of, well, the words “condom, condom” repeated over and over, at times in two-part harmony, the Condom ringtone is actually pretty catchy. Which, considering that it’s attempting to prevent something that is very catchy - HIV - is probably a good thing. According to Radharani Mitra, the BBC World Service Trust’s creative director, “Ringtones have become such personal statements that a specially created condom ringtone seemed just the right vehicle to define its user as a sensible person. We have always had a strong interactive, response-oriented element in this ongoing campaign. This downloadable ringtone provides yet another opportunity for our target audience to translate the message into an action point. The very act of downloading and using this ringtone would have a counter effect on the inhibitions and taboos that can be associated with condoms. And it adds an element of fun and comfort to it.” Indeed, the commercial being run in India shows the condom ringtone going off while the phone’s owner is at a wedding. Only you can decide, once downloading the free condom ringtone, if you’ll want to mute your mobile phone before going to a wedding.
