As you all know, I love my personal video recorder (PVR), and wouldn’t be without one. While I myself have a ReplayTV, it just happens to be what we ended up with, and I would be equally happy with the functions offered by a Tivo. In fact, most of our friends have Tivos, and just rave about them.

Tivo has been most recently mentioned here for offering Internet downloads of indie movies and television shows before they even air on regular television, and for their superlative ability to skip commercials.

And if you’ve been thinking of getting a Tivo (or a second or third Tivo!) now’s the time!

Tivo is running a rebate program right now through which they will send you a $150.00 rebate for purchase of a brand new Series2 Tivo.

Now, as it happens, Amazon is also offering a qualifying Series2 40-hour Tivo for $99.00. Yes, you read that right, $99.00. In other words, the rebate is greater than the purchase price.

This seems too good to be true, and so I called Tivo customer service, and asked them whether purchasing a Tivo for less than the rebate would still qualify for the rebate, and they advised me that yes, a purchase of less than the rebate price would qualify, so long as the Tivo is purchased during the qualifying dates (now), and as long as the Tivo purchased is brand new, and not refurbished.

So there you have it. Buy a Tivo for $99.00, and qualify for the $150.00 rebate program.

I can’t promise that you’ll get back more than you paid for the Tivo, but you will at least get back your full purchase price.

You can buy the Tivo from Amazon for $99.00 here.

And go here to get the Tivo rebate form.

  1. I think you omitted the $299 “activation fee” so the real price is something like $400 before rebate, not $99.

The original Tivo could be used as a DVR without activation, but I heard they changed the firmware so any newer Tivo is useless without activation.

I just looked at the web page and I see they raised the price about $100, so now the real price is around $500 before rebate, not $99.

  2. TIVO is $199 at Amazon…not $99.

  3. Well, sure enough. So many of you guys must have taken advantage of it that they raised the price! Still not a bad deal though. $198.99 - $150.00 = $48.99 for a 40 hour Tivo.

  4. Looking at the TIVO Terms & Conditions for rebate there is a requirement for particular Service Numbers. How do you know whether you get the right product if you order on the internet?
