Just in case you weren’t spending enough time on Facebook now (you are using Facebook, right? Our Facebook page is here), Facebook has announced that they will be rolling out Facebook Chat within the next few weeks. According to Facebook Product Manager, Peter Deng, “When you log in to the site there is a Chat (user interface) at the bottom of the browser…It’s unobtrusive and there when you need it.” CNet reporters Caroline McCarthy and Dan Farber, who got a sneak preview of the Facebook Chat feature, report that the Facebook Chat system, which integrates with your Facebook friends list, requires no download (much, it would seem, like Google’s Gmail chat system), and works with all browsers. Additionally, report Farber and McCarthy, “Members can hold multiple conversations, log on and off easily, keep the conversation going as they navigate through different pages on Facebook, and pop the chat up into a new window.” So why is Facebook rolling out yet another instant messenger chat system? Because, says Matt Cohler, Facebook’s Vice President of Strategy and Business Operations, “We want Facebook to be part of your experience all over the Web.”
