Internet service provider Earthlink has announced that it has reached a settlement with two high-profile and extremely prolific spammers dubbed the “Alabama Spammers” for their penchant for using dial-ups in and around Birmingham, Alabama. Damon DeCrescenzo and David Burstyn, alledged to be part of a multi-state spam ring, were sued by Earthlink for sending more than 250 million pieces of spam hawking Viagra and dating services, among other things. Individuals and companies in Florida, California, Tennessee, Michigan, and Nevada were cited as well. The settlement includes a cash payment by DeCrescenzo and Burstyn to Earthlink. While under the terms of the settlement Earthlink will not disclose the exact sum, a spokesman for Earthlink called it “substantial”. As part of the settlement, DeCrescenzo and Bursytn have also agreed to narc out some of the other spamring members. DeCrescenzo has been listed by the anti-spam organization SpamHaus as one of the world’s top spammers, so his take down is a win not only for Earthlink, but the Internet-using public in general. Good on ya, Earthlink! Two kissy kissys from Aunty!
