Summary: A suspected Al Qaeda terrorist has been convicted for downloading bomb-making instructions. Is that reason enough?

In a move sure to strike fear into the hearts of both budding terrorists and civil liberties advocates everywhere, Abbas Boutrab, an Algerian living in Ireland, suspected of planning terrorist activities, and described as having “a strong allegiance to a terrorist group that is linked to the al-Qaeda network,” has been convicted and jailed for having downloaded bomb-making plans from the Internet.

Note, he didn’t actually do anything with them (although he may well have planned to, I’m not commenting on his actual intent or ties to terrorist groups, indeed he is identified as being a known dangerous threat). But the point is, he was convicted for downloading the plans and having them in his possession, along with instructions for how to carry out an attack, and how to make a silencer for an assault rifle.

Using the instructions which Boutrab had downloaded, the FBI was able to make and detonate a bomb. Italian, Dutch, French and Irish police forces were also involved in the action against Boutrab. Again, I’m not saying that he wasn’t a bad guy.

But he was convicted of downloading something. Just keep that in mind.

“I am satisfied that his possession of the material was not out of curiosity but was for terrorist purposes,” said the judge.
