Because Windows works so well, and is such a secure product, newer versions of the ATM will be run on Windows, instead of the standard OS/2. And, oh yes, they will be connected to the bank’s IP network. This seems just crazy to us. Windows is such an inherently unsecure platform (in case you didn’t recognize the above irony for what it was). Already the Slammer virus has taken out 13,000 Windows-based ATMs belonging to Bank of America. In fact, according to Trend Micro, as many as 70% of all ATMs are already based on XP or embedded XP. Scary stuff. In case you can’t wait to see a blue screen of death at your ATM, daimyo.org has a picture of one available here along with several other funny (and scary) BSOD’s.
