BFD! Gutenberg Project and IBIBLIO are among NGO/NFP groups which figured out the mechanics for this diffusion of knowledge. Amazon for at least a year has been shipping pallets of books to off-shore plants for ripping and scanning and OCR'ing. So Google has not invented sliced bread here. That said, the fact that Google worked exclusive contracts with these uber repositories suggests some quid exchange for access that the NGO/NFP folks could not afford and into the future shall not approach. Even highbrows, brought to Google by the collections' inticements, need targeted advertising.

This is wonderful. I'm most curious about how this process could have been existing on campuses around the nation, and not leaked to the web until now. (or has it?) 8-D
