Never miss a show again! You can take it with you! Internet tv, and even cellphone television, are now a reality! Introducing OMN (Open Media Network) for the Internet, MobiTV for your cellphone! Wow! Cellevision!

Aunty has actually tried MobiTV, and she has to tell you, it’s pretty darned neat. Frivolous for the most part, but neat. So far she has watched CNN, Discovery, and TLC on the screen of her cellphone. Now granted, it’s only available on a couple of models of cellphone so far (Aunty has a Nokia 6620), and you definitely want a phone which is compatible with your carrier’s high speed network, but still, if you’ve got that it takes, and you’re jonesing for your telefix, MobiTV rocks. And at only $9.99 per month it’s, less face it, a small incremental cost over what you are probably paying for hundreds of channels over cable or satellite which you are never going to watch.

MobiTV is currently offered through Sprint, Cingular/AT&T, and Midwest Wireless. Their website is at MobivTV.

On the other hand if, like Aunty, you connect your laptop to the Internet nearly everwhere you go, or you just prefer to watch your television on your computer, perhaps Internet tv would be more to your liking, in which case the Open Media Network (OMN) may be more to your liking. Open Media Network maintains an archive of television (and audio) shows including public television shows, movies, public radio, video blogs, and podcasts, all free for the downloading, and viewable through their special OMN software (also free for downloading). While at present OMN is only available for Windows and Explorer, their website indicates that Mac and Firefox applications are under development. OMN can be found on the web here.

So there you have it, and..there you have it! Television wherever you want.

Imagine a world where nobody is carrying on annoying public conversations on their cellphones because they are all too busy watching them.

  1. Great Idea at OMN, but there’s a snag - it installs Kontiki, a known bit of Spy/Ad-ware that is a b***h to fully clean out of your system.
