Even though they can serve such legitimate purposes as preventing cellular eavesdropping, cell phone jammers have always been controversial, and in fact cellphone jammers are illegal in the United States, where, according to the FCC, “The operation of transmitters designed to jam or block wireless communications is a violation of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended (”Act”). See 47 U.S.C. Sections 301, 302a, 333…Fines for a first offense can range as high as $11,000 for each violation or imprisonment for up to one year..” In other countries they are used primarily by establishments to create a more serene atmosphere (Mexican churches, Japanese theatres), or to enhance security (corporations in countries where cellular jamming is not illegal wishing to prevent cellular eavesdropping). Of course, with the Internet there are no boundaries, and legality doesn’t stop people in the U.S. from attempting to acquire them, sometimes successfully. Now an as-yet-confirmed report indicates that a robber in Massachusetts may have employed the use of a cell phone jammer to prevent victims from being able to dial 911 on their cell phones. Police in Georgetown, Massachusetts ended up exploding a suspicious gym bag which witnesses say the robber carried, which may have contained the jammer. Cellular jammers are big business for Netline Communications, where customers hoping to prevent cellular eavesdropping and other cellular transgressions flock to buy their line of C-Guard cellular firewalls.
