The Washington Post is reporting that the Bush Cheney re-election website has barred access to visitors from outside the United States, after sustaining an online attack which took the website down for several hours.

Boohoohoo..cry Aunty a river. When your site gets taken down, you don’t bar access to all of Earth (what message does that send about our President’s relationship to the rest of the world?), you fix your security, which, were it adequate to begin with, should have prevented the downtime.

So, for the past week, nobody from outside of the United States and Canada has been able to view the site, instead seeing a white screen which reads simply “Access denied: You don’t have permission to access www.georgewbush.com on this server.”

Wow, talk about disenfranchising not just U.S. citizens located around the world, but the very U.S. troops whom our Commander in Chief sent to Iraq and Afghanistan. They can fight for him, but they can’t view his website to determine whether they should re-elect him. Apparently somebody back at georgewbush.com forgot about them out there…risking their lives to fight his war on terrorism…thousands of troops who are..you know..voters.

As a side note, even if they punched holes in the firewall for .mil addresses, Aunty knows from her work with the Gmail4Troops effort that a huge number of our troops in the Middle East have to rely on cybercafes for their web access, and so are not accessing the ‘net from .mil addresses.

Incompetence negatively impacts thousands of innocent U.S. citizens in the name of security. Ah well, it’s not the first time, and it certainly won’t be the last.
