China has been in the news with relation to the Internet a lot of late. They recently joined the anti-spam “London Plan”, have expanded their Internet offerings to their citizens with MSN Spaces’ Chinese portal (which admits to censoring in China), and, most recently, have been in the center of a corporate espionage scandal.

And, oh yeah, their online gamers take their online games really seriously, resorting to custody fights and even murder.

Now they are gearing up for a “China Internet Summit” to “discuss the future of China’s Internet industry”, and key speakers include none other than former U.S. President Bill Clinton:

HANGZHOU, China, July 27 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ — Former U.S. President Bill
Clinton will be the keynote speaker at the 2005 China Internet Summit at West
Lake, to be held on September 10, 2005 in Hangzhou, China. Alibaba.com
announced today that prominent CEOs from around the world will also
participate to engage in talks and discuss China’s Internet commerce and
Internet industry growth.

The China Internet Summit at West Lake is an annual event which brings
together the leading CEOs of Internet companies from China and around the
world for a day of discussion and cooperation. Since its inception in 2000,
the event has become the primary summit among Internet leaders in China, with
CEOs from more than ten NASDAQ-listed China Internet companies serving as
speakers over the years. This year, the Summit will go global, under the
theme ”Connecting China and the World.”

Organized by Alibaba.com, the China Internet Summit at West Lake is non-
partisan in nature, with the focus on open discussion between speakers and
attendees. This year, the dialogue will address the key issues facing China’s
Internet industry, including globalization strategies, the future of online
gamin and the development of e-commerce.

Along with President Clinton, other confirmed speakers for this year’s
event include:

— William Ding, Founder of Netease (Nasdaq: NTES)
— Charles Zhang, CEO of Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU)
— Ma Huateng, CEO of Tencent (SEHK 700)
— Tianqiao Chen, CEO of Shanda (Nasdaq: SNDA)
