Rumours of an Apple Media Pad – a cellular-enabled touch-screen device larger than an iPhone but smaller than a traditional laptop or tablet – are swirling. And it would seem that rumours of the Mac Media Pad are more than just rumours, as industry insiders confirm the imminant announcement of the Apple Media Pad (which may be or be the precursor to the much-awaited Mac Tablet), as well as that they are to be offered through Verizon, along with a Verizon iPhone light version. (Although it won’t be called “iPhone Lite”, it is rumoured to be a stripped-down version of the iPhone, modified to work on the Verizon CDMA network.)

While the news of a Verizon iPhone is marginally interesting, the idea of an Apple Media Pad is potentially explosive. As one insider who has allegedly seen the Apple Media Pad says, “We are talking about a device where people will say, ‘Damn, why didn’t we do this?’ Apple is probably going to define the damn category.”

Eyewitness reports claim that the Apple Media Pad will have functionalities that include listening to music, viewing photos, watching high-definition videos, and wifi which would be used for placing calls, ala Skype. (Hmm…sounds a bit like a Sony PSP.)

The unnamed person who has seen the Apple Media Pad is also quoted as saying that it could be formidible competition for the Amazon Kindle, being both smaller than the Kindle, but with a touch screen that is larger than the Kindle’s non-touch screen.

Only time will tell as to the accuracy of these rumours, but we sure hope that they are true!
