AOL has been in the news recently for both suing spammers, and, as reported recently here, for reducing the amount of spam landing in its users’ inboxes - some thinking that the two may be related. The new software version 9.0, dubbed “AOL 9.0 Security Edition”, is available as a free download, and includes such features as McAfee’s anti-virus software built-in, with free updates (a similar feature was previously available but for a fee). The new software also includes a more robust version of its anti-spyware component, “SpyZapper”, which under the new software runs every time the user signs on. Said an AOL spokesperson “More often than not, when a member faces a performance issue with the computer, they think they just have a performance problem, but what they really have is a virus or spyware.” AOL users should log into their accounts and from there should be able to find a link to an announcement of the new software, along with download instructions.

I, personally, have been using AOL for years. I have a Cable Modem Broadband connection at home and haven’t used AOL’s dialup in years. Every time they offer an upgrade I download & install it. Whenever I get to a dialogue box that asks if I want to perform a Typical or Custom installation I always choose Custom. The last few upgrades have given the user a choice to, what they state, install “AOL only”. I want to know why if it says “AOL only” then why is the AOL Toolbar installed within my Internet Explorer, why is my IE Home page changed to http://WWW.AOL.COM, why is an AOL Screensaver installed on my PC, and finally, why is there an AOL Coach version also installed on my machine (In fact 2 AOL Coach versions 1.0 & 2.0

But what if it’s AOL that’s putting that spyware on your machine. I’ve been getting a lot from them lately and i’m fed up with it, i will not be purchasing extra ’stuff’ from them i’d rather leave. I’ve noticed an awful lot lately and i don’t like it one little bit.
