“I’m moving to Australia, because their president is Christian and actually supports what he says” Tweeted Kristen Neel, in her now famous tweet. And the backlash that the anti-Obama teen faced because of that comment has finally caused her to disable her Twitter account. It was not because the comments she received were threatening, it was because they were merely pointing out what a twit she is.

Of course, Australia does not have a President, they have a Prime Minister. And Prime Minister Julia Gillard is a woman. Who is an atheist. Who is shacked up with her male life partner. But nice try, Neel.

It did not take long for the comments to pour in from Twitter users. One of the first was from TV editor at The Australian, Ian Cuthbertson:

@cuthbertsoni @KristenNeel_ Our prime minister is a woman, an atheist who lives with a man she hasn’t married. I don’t think you’d like it here.

Aussie author Mark Pesce also weighed in:

@mpesce @KristenNeel_ 1) Australia does not have a president. 2) Our prime minister is an atheist. 3) Yes, she really is.

And then all of the other Tweets rolled in:

@ABCnewsintern @KristenNeel_ Not one word of that sentence is true. I’m not even angry, I’m impressed.

@PatrickAvenell @KristenNeel_ Congratulations on being the dumbest person in the world

@NewtonMark @KristenNeel_ But apart from literally every detail of what what you said, you were 100% right! Good Show!

@ki_sekiya I feel sorry for @KristenNeel_ USA, may I suggest more funding to Public Education to avoid another Twitter-tragedy in 4 years time.

@Stefanillo The problem with democracy is that @KristenNeel_ gets the right to vote as someone who knows what they are doing.

It apparently did not take long for the running commentary to get to Neel, who has now disabled her Twitter account. No word yet as to if Prime Minister Gillard will be offering Neel a courtesy trip to Australia for a lesson in Australian government and current events.

  1. Well, at least Anne & You did something! Congrats! Thanks.

This poor kid needs help. Not necessarily drive her off the net, but help her understand the world. I hope she gets that, soon.

We lost a young girl to bullies in Canada, recently. Where were her parents, friends, family, school mates, teachers, etc? Let us hope “a moment’s ignorance” does not do this again.

And with young people, that is so easy. As one grows older, one become more able to withstand bullies.

    Hang in there. Take care.

  2. anne and i may possibly disagree on obama, i don’t know and i’m not asking. i did not vote for him, but under “heinlein’s rule” if you’re citing his “starship trooper” story, both she and i would be entitled to vote as veterans of service, as we were both volunteers, she as a woman, not subject to the draft, joining the u.s, army, and i as an enlisted marine, not waiting to be drafted.

  3. Sometimes, because of stuff like this, I wonder: Is democracy worth it? Sometimes an absolute monarch or Caesar makes sense! (See Plato and Aristotle.)

RA Heinlein may have been right about his attitudes and theories towards “who” should be allowed to vote, and who should not be allowed to….

Or maybe it is just twitter. Twitter, tweets, twits… I see the logical progression… No “twinking” tho? Twitter is a popular yet highly limited medium. It does not seem to be causing much PROPER critical thinking. Any idiot can think critically. But can he/she think properly?

And they say we “do not need to learn anything any more”. No need to teach or learn facts. Why remember anything? Gonna be able to Google it all up. If you do not know WHAT Question to ask, or HOW, or interpret the answer (for validity, etc.)… Google is of no use. And you need some facts and knowledge and experience to analyse and interpret! (This poor teenager clearly lacked some.)

Teachers say they teach their students to think. WRONG! People already do that. Or in some cases, they do not! (My old accounting prof was right!)

And this kid was a teenager in school. Yikes! School failed her. I think she failed school, too. Can you imagine people like this growing up?

It makes me wonder: Was she being sarcastic? Cynical? Facetious? An advocatus diaboli?

And, NOBODY reached out to help her gently. One of the limitations of twitter. How much help (at a time) can you give in 100+ characters?
