It's a dual-receiver DirectTV satellite receiver AND a Tivo digital recorder. With it I can record two shows at the same time AND watch a previously recorded show , or I can record one show while watching another "live". I don't know if it's BECAUSE of Tivo, but I agree with Aunty that I watch a lot less television now than before. Maybe I just have less time to watch TV and now can be selective about what I watch when I finally have the time. I can't imagine giving up my Tivo! Besides, you really don't have to pay the fee unless you need the advanced features (advanced program guide, automatic recording, etc.). 2. Yes, you can. It's essentially the same setup as a VCR (RTFM). Go ahead, stick with a VCR. While you're at it, why not buy cassettes instead of CDs? With TiVo it's hard not to watch more, especially since you have the option of recording shows that are similar to ones you have rated and/or recorded (not to mention the WishList feature). Really, though, it all depends on how much space you have on your DVR's hard drive. If you only have 40 hours of space to use, it gets filled up quickly and you have to take time to watch certain shows and make sure to set others to not delete until you say so. If you have more hours, you can wait longer, but it fills up quickly. Maybe some people watch TV less after owning one of those devices, but I personally have watched way more.
